I believe something is missing in trauma support. Whether trauma occurred from a childhood experience, an abusive relationship, the type of career you have, a car accident…the reason doesn’t matter. People like me, who address the energetic part of someone’s health have known this for years. A lot of the usual focus is on counselling/therapy or medication which can be important and necessary – but we have to actually release the trauma from the body, not just manage symptoms. This is the part I believe is missing and can be addressed by adding energy medicine modalities like Reiki, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Therapeutic Touch, The Emotion Code and many more.
Today I read a wonderful article, “Trying to Overcome Trauma? You Might Be Going About It The Wrong Way” on the blog PsychCentral. Bessel Van Der Kolk, an expert in the field of trauma was quoted in the New York Times as saying, “Trauma has nothing whatsoever to do with cognition. It has to do with your body being reset to interpret the world as a dangerous place,” (Interlandi, 2014). While this article doesn’t talk about energetic healing modalities, it does talk about resetting an overwhelmed nervous system, and that’s how energetic healing can help.
Thirty years of healing work has shown me that “shock equals lock” no matter whether it’s a physical, mental or emotional shock. Events happen, energetic connections are created between the event and the emotion around that event, nervous systems get stuck on fight/flight/freeze, and sometimes talking about what happened is re-traumatizing. If that wasn’t hard enough to deal with by itself, shock-injured people may also have to deal with attitudes of “toughen up”, “let it go”, “lots of people have it worse than you” or “it’s just part of the job”. (Who on earth decided THAT?) Won’t it be a relief when once and for all we realize that trauma injuries aren’t a lack of mental strength or a character deficiency but a measurable physical/emotional disturbance that can be healed if we take a more whole-person approach?
Energy therapies aren’t meant to replace medical care but they can add a new dimension of support and they all work together with whatever care you’re receiving. Reiki and Therapeutic Touch help promote deep rest and relaxation, and Flower Essences, The Emotion Code, homeopathy, acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc. all support a healing body and mind. Yoga, float therapy, holistic nutrition and mindfulness meditation are also very helpful. If you’re a caregiver, therapist or family member of someone with a trauma injury, make sure you’re supporting yourself, too.
Our approach to dealing with traumatic and stress injuries needs to change. Each person has a unique experience with trauma and their recipe for wellness will be as individual as they are. Please don’t give up, and don’t let anyone tell you there’s nothing else out there…coming to the end of one skill set doesn’t mean there aren’t other approaches worth exploring.
