Starting the Mental Health Conversation Among First Responders
Suicide, PTSD, and other trauma/stress related issues are a growing concern among first responders. The increasing number of disability claims, work related suicides, and resignations are directly impacting the effectiveness of all first responder communities. More and more, leaders in first responder communities are being called upon to do something about this growing problem. To date, those who have attempted to seek help report that their efforts to address the issues are not well received. Without action, mental health issues in first responder communities will continue to escalate. But how do we even start the conversation? This interactive process facilitated by the MegaHealth at Work team, creates a safe, confidential, and open space in which to begin acknowledging issues, creating dialogues, and even exploring options and solutions. So, let’s talk.
Individuals who participate in this process will:
- Identify the issues and blocks to even discussing mental health issues among first responders
- Identify and explore the mental health issues themselves
- Begin generating possibilities and options for solutions, education, training, support, and treatment
